The Grand Staircase is the name of a large area of sedimentary rock that starts as far north as Bryce Canyon, extends south to the Grand Canyon, and includes Zion Canyon. As we found out on our recent trip to the area, there is no staircase, per se. Its name was coined by American geologist and one of the National Geographic Society founders, Clarence Dutton.
