As we found out on our recent trip to the area, there is no staircase, per se. Its name was coined by American geologist and one of the National Geographic Society founders, <a href=\"http:\/\/newswatch.nationalgeographic.com\/2012\/09\/06\/clarence-dutton-poet-of-the-grand-canyon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clarence Dutton<\/a>.
